A relaxing long weekend in La Jolla

A few months back we took a long weekend and headed to the west coast. I am always up for a getaway to California, from San Fran, Napa and Carmel to LA or San Diego! I must have been a California girl in my past life! Good thing the flight from Denver to pretty much anywhere in the sunshine state is only about two hours.

This time, we headed south to sunny La Jolla. We aimed to make it a cheaper trip, since we had just been to Iceland several months before. We used airline miles for one ticket, stayed at Airbnb versus a pricey beach hotel, and only went out for one nice dinner. We bought fruit, snacks, picnic food and alcohol at Trader Joes to bring to the beach. Here are some specifics:

Sleep: We decided to try Airbnb for the first time and would absolutely recommend it. We chose the La Jolla Beach Paradise listing for the price, positive reviews and proximity to the beach! The private room was detached from the house with a separate entrance, and our host stocked it with beach necessities like coolers, chairs and even an umbrella. After enjoying the beach and the little town of La Jolla, we soaked in their hot tub in the super cute backyard.

Nosh: The best meal (and view) was at George's at the Cove. If the rooftop restaurant is packed, go downstairs one level and snag an ocean-view spot at the open air bar just in time for sunset. If you are in La Jolla or Mission Beach, it's worth a short drive to Bird Rock Village to visit the charming Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. We loved getting a cappuccino and a croissant with the locals. Other than those two places we mostly snacked on Trader Joe's goodies and enjoyed oceanside picnics under palm trees.

Enjoy: The point of this trip for us was to relax at the beach, of course. We spent the most time at Tourmaline beach, as it was a 5 minute walk from our little rental. Mission beach was a close second and made for a fun walk on the boardwalk. La Jolla itself is picture-perfect, you could spend a whole day walking along that gorgeous shoreline, watching the waves crash and peeking at the seals, too. We also drove up to Mt. Soledad for the stunning views. Otherwise we just spent those four days reading and lounging at the beach or our Airbnb rental.

Pretty excited for whenever we get to head to California next! What's your favorite place to visit in CA?
